Anti Glamour

My video Nothing is True was featured in Anti Glamour: Portraits of Women, shown with Burn with Desire: Photography and Glamour at the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto, Canada.

The video presents two adjoining videos: a woman’s face and an altar cloth, with an accompanying sound track. She struggles to breathe, to say the words beyond language. She is condemned, like a female Sisyphus, to repeat the same guttural sounds. She carries everything, she achieves nothing. A sacrificial altar cloth wafts subtly in rhythm to her utterances — the first breath, or the last breath. Nothing is true but her sentence.

The video is a meditation on language, and female portraiture, disconnecting them from cultural ritual in order to confront our naked existence.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) plays with ideas of glamour and female representation in two exhibitions on view January – April 2015. Burn with Desire: Photography and Glamour offers a sweeping yet considered view of photography’s role in defining glamour since the 1920s. Approaching female identity from a different angle, Anti-Glamour: Portraits of Women seeks to challenge stereotypes, while claiming an alternative presence for women in the public sphere. Both exhibitions open with a reception on January 21, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

From Edward Steichen’s iconic portrait of silent film star Gloria Swanson (1924) to Annie Leibovitz’s influential gatefold covers for Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood issue (1995-2014), Burn with Desire: Photography and Glamour explores how photography has shaped notions of glamour, sensuality and femininity in Western culture. Drawing on prints from the RIC’s Black Star Collection of photoreportage, as well as other holdings internationally, this multimedia exhibition provides a historical survey encompassing Hollywood studio portraits, red-carpet premieres, and “behind-the-scenes” snapshots of film sets and stars at rest. Alongside these photographs, a series of artistic projects offer a critical address of traditional ideals of glamour, including works by Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.

To complement this major exhibition, Anti-Glamour: Portraits of Women features photographic and video portraits by artists who address issues of female representation. Works by Marie Le Mounier, Katherine Lannin, Rebecca Belmore, Ange Leccia, Gunilla Josephson, Jo Spence and Leila Zahiri offer a contemporary counterpoint to the traditional standards that have shaped female identity. These projects range from ironic appropriation of attractive femmes fatales conjured by the film industry, to empowered bare-breasted figures proudly confronting the viewer. The works on view offer an alternative to imagery that often reduces women’s individuality to a recurrent iconography of vulnerability and seduction.

Burn with Desire and Anti-Glamour are curated by Gaëlle Morel, Exhibitions Curator at the RIC. Both exhibitions will be on view at the Ryerson Image Centre from January 21 to April 5, 2015.

Who are you? In this context a Swedish born Canadian video artist www.gunillajosephson.com

What do you do ? What are your career highlights?
With my company of 1 AHEDDAFILM I write, shoot, create sound, and edit my video [art], often collaborating with other professionals in my field. Some of my career highlights are being rewarded the Festival Prize at the Oberhausen Shortfilm Festival in Germany for HELLO INGMAR, a digital short film about my relationship to Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman, and being awarded the Canada Council Artist Studio in Paris, the Nordic Arts Council Studio in Bergen, Norway and in Rome. My work has appeared at Museé D’art Moderne, Montreal, at Winnipeg Art Gallery, at the Sydney Film Festival in Australia, LUX Cinema in London, at  Moderna Museet in Stockholm, at Kino Xenix in Zurich, Gallery Kuumola in Helsinki, and more.

What makes a good music video? What stood out about your picks?
Musical and artistic vision and inventiveness, combined with  a huge amount of artistic integrity and professionalism. The videos I chose were to my mind in that vein. For my choices I let my eyes, ears and heart [rate?..] guide me. Oh, and my mouth, since art work that makes you hungry is good art, from the drawings of DaVinci, Björk’s music and Martin Creed’s water colour stripes.

iPad Drawings

Late at night while I listen to Laurie Brown’s Signal on CBC I draw, madly, hundreds of lines on my ipad. As a distracting activity. Half of the lines are drawn perpendicular to the other half and a grid is formed, a simple matrix, a virtual weave. During the process I gradually and in very small increments change the thickness of the line from in 1/4 mm and up to 3,5 mm. For each drawing, and sometimes within one drawing, I change the hue [colour] of the line. I start with a thin, dark line and move slowly to thicker lines and lighter shades of he same hue. I use my left index finger to draw on the smooth, translucent and warm screen of my ipad, effortlessly laying down, over-writing layers upon layers. Slowly the spaces between the lines in the grid vanish. I continue. I think only about the process, stopping only to shift hue, intensity and thickness of the line. At one point my eyes close and my finger continues to draw. When ‘the drawing  stops’ I use the Play-back function in the Brushes App to watch the drawing ‘draw itself’ from beginning to end, which allows me to follow the lines without drawing them. I think about the lines and I repeat the same pattern in my mind’s eye. A pointless activity suddenly appears rational and methodical. There is no resistance when my index finger that draws or when the drawing Plays back. There is only swift and gentle process.

Maija Lempiäinen-Nyrén.

 

Maija is my greatest friend since..always.  Maija has an incredibly interesting and mysterious inner life. Everyone who is around her becomes fascinated with this lovely, inward looking woman from Finland with her small, black star’ eyes and  soft and gentle voice. Looking at her art is like swimming for the soul. The delicate yet ‘significant’ plants  in Maija’s paintings  constitute a huge and developing  herbarium and is her visual vocabulary.

Although most critics and viewers see her motifs as plants, Maija’s created ‘things’ are not  necessarily plants but creatures, shadows, water,  natural formations, form, colour, all approximations of her own truth, stemming from her strong connection to life. How else explain it? The variations are endless, streaming out to us from Maija’s  generous source/well of  emotional engagement and ardor.  Year after year she keeps her direction, follows her road. She seems to always be on her road, regardless of what happens around her, in real life.  Maybe for Maija the richness of her inner life is more real than reality.  Her art is her generous invitation to us to share her world.  For as long as I have known Maija, 3o years now she has not hesitated, veered, vacillated, put her brush down for more than a couple of days.  Thank you Maija.
