Näcken

2004, 10:00

The video Näcken, is a consciously pathetic mise en
scene of Ernst Josephson’s painting Näcken, 1882-84. The video depicts a pastoral terrain of mythology and staged theatre, a psychological landscape of isolation and suspension of time. The place exists outside of modernity, time and technology. A weary man (Näcken) sits on a stone in a waterfall awkwardly playing his fiddle. His emaciated body, his seaweed hair, the fake scenery and the absurd soundscape of three recurring notes briefly triggering the waterfall create another rendition of my obsession
with success and failure, truths and lies.
